In May 1949, Gunma Normal School, Gunma Youth Normal School, Maebashi Medical Collage, Maebashi Collage of Medical Science, and Kiryu Technical Collage were merged and established as Gunma University. It was incorporated into the national university under the national university corporation law in April 2004.
