Producing leading engineers with the aspiration to realize a sustainable society
Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) was established in 1976 as an institute of technology emphasizing research and education at the graduate level, with a central focus on the development of practical technology. NUT produces leading engineers equipped with practical and creative abilities for the pursuit of innovations and the aspiration to realize a sustainable society. NUT has gained high recognition as a university promoting the SDGs, evidenced by its significant appointments and certifications from international organizations. NUT has been appointed as the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) SDG 9 Hub university for "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure," and furthermore, received certifications from UNESCO: the "GIGAKU SDG Institute" as a Chair Programme (UNESCO Chair) for its educational programs, and the "GIGAKU SDG Network"—consisting of ten institutions in six countries and one observer company—as a UNITWIN Network.
Life at Nagaoka
Nagaoka is a city located approximately 260 km northwest of Tokyo in a straight line, and is full of many attractions, including exquisite cuisine, natural beauty throughout the four seasons, and world-class cultural heritage. Above all, the greatest charm lies in the warm-hearted people that support the city. Every summer, the Nagaoka Matsuri Grand Fireworks Festival attracts over 1 million spectators from all over Japan. On the eve of the festival, a folk dance parade is held in which many students participate while wearing matching traditional yukata garments. In the winter, the city becomes blanketed in pure snow. NUT is located on a hill overlooking Nagaoka city, where students and staff from throughout Japan gather in a tranquil campus.
