The first higher educational institution in the arts that accepted female students.

Founded in 1900, we are the first institution in Japan which opened the gate of art education for women with aim of empowering women to achieve independence through the arts, and are still only one women’s art university in Japan. For over 120 years, we have produced more than 70,000 talented female artists, designers and educators. Among them are the artists who made a great contribution to the history of Japanese modern art and are the designers of popular characters such as Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, Gudetama and Rilakkuma. We focus on creating the educational environment where women can feel that they are able to achieve anything without restricting their ideas, and where women can feel safe and comfortable to learn. We believe that global insight is an important factor for artists and designers of the next generation, therefore we are focusing on cultivating global human resources. We hold exchanging exhibition with overseas partner universities, international summer school and foreign internships. In addition, we send nearly 100 students to 18 overseas partner universities through various kinds of studying abroad program. 

We provide students with many extra-curricular career support programs; plenty of opportunities to engage in collaborative projects with companies and local governments. After graduation, you may have opportunities to work in all areas of art and design, including fashion, video, comics, games, animation, art education, and research.
