about Senshu University 01
Senshu University was founded in 1880 at the dawn of the Meiji era. In 1870, the newly formed Meiji government sent selected individuals overseas as academic emissaries. Among those sent to the USA were the founders of Senshu University: Nagatane Soma, Inajiro Tajiri, Tanetaro Megata, and Shigetada Komai.
Upon graduating from their respective universities—Columbia, Yale, Harvard, and Rutgers—they returned to Japan and established Senshu Gakko (the forerunner of present-day Senshu University). With the dream of empowering other individuals to further contribute to Japan’s prosperity, their school became the first academic institution in Japan to teach law and economics in Japanese.
Senshu University is currently comprised of 8 undergraduate schools with 20 departments: Economics, Economics for Life and Social Environment, International Economics, Law, Politics, Business Administration, Business Design, Marketing, Accounting, Japanese Literature and Culture, English, Philosophy, History, Geography, Journalism, Network and Information, Psychology, Sociology, Japanese Language and Linguistics and International Communication. Along with its graduate school and various research institutions, the university also boasts a professional law school.
Among its two main campuses (Ikuta Campus in Kanagawa and Kanda Campus in Tokyo), notable facilities include the university library (famous for its collections of rare first edition European and Japanese classics), the “Senshu International House” dormitory (completed in 2014), and the 140th Anniversary Building [Building No. 10 on Kanda Campus] (completed in 2020) which offers a spectacular view of downtown Tokyo and state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities. Building upon the founders’ initiative to study overseas, Senshu University has forged exchange agreements with 26 universities and 8 organizations across 19 countries/region (as of October, 2022). The programs created through these partnerships continue to facilitate invaluable opportunities for Japanese and international students to interact cross-culturally and gain global perspectives.
Since its inception, Senshu University has propounded the development of “Socio-Intelligence”; a guiding philosophy which empowers students to discover their abilities and mature into globally-minded individuals with the initiative to solve social problems. This philosophy has enabled the founders’ dream to become a reality for over 280,000 alumni.
