The educational philosophy of "develop a new generation of artists with culture and intelligence" and "providing art education that leads to true human freedom".
Musashino Art University (MAU) was founded in 1929 as Teikoku Art School, and has produced more than 70,000 graduates to date as Japan's leading art university, based on the educational philosophy of "develop a new generation of artists with culture and intelligence" and "providing art education that leads to true human freedom".
The ability to discover questions that have no right answers, to explore, and to express the answers, which can be acquired through artistic activities, is most needed in this day and age.
MAU’s graduates are active as artists, designers, architects, filmmakers, and other specialists in various fields of arts, and their creativity and communication skills cultivated at MAU are highly valued, and they are employed by many of the leading companies in Japan and the world.
In April 2019, MAU established the College of Creative Thinking for Social Innovation and Graduate School of Creative Thinking for Social Innovation, and now has two faculties and 12 departments.
With that, MAU opened a new campus “Ichigaya Campus” in the heart of Tokyo (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo). On the first floor of the campus, “KYOSO Studio (co-creation studio)” was established, where experimental events connecting the art university with the real world are held throughout the year.
